Why Should I Have My Devotions In the Morning?

In our heads, we all know that having personal time alone with God is vital to our Christian life. However, so often life seems to get in the way. Are you having trouble getting your time alone with God and making it count? Consider these reasons for having your devotions earlier in the day. 1. I know how hard it is to get up in the morning. However, the fact remains that for many people, if they don’t get their devotional time in the morning while the kids are still in bed, they won’t get it at all that day. … Continue reading

Our Favorite Literature

Or, “What Great Books Have Taught Us.” As I’ve mentioned before, we do a lot of reading around here — together, alone, silently, aloud. I think of our books as the main and most important curriculum we use, because reading together does more than just impart a good story. Good books inspire and inform, prick the conscience and confirm the truth. They make us dig and think, laugh and nod, wonder and weep. With these things in mind, I want to share a few of our favorites, and the fruits we’ve gained from reading these gems: Charlotte’s Web taught us … Continue reading

5 Tips For Having Devotions With Toddlers

Having family devotions with children at any age is a challenge. With young children especially, parents must combat the “wiggle worm” and a short attention span. However, family devotions are vital to the healthy spiritual life of a family. Young children are often taught to pray during family devotions. They learn to ask questions about God and talk about Him openly. Everyone in the family benefits from spending time together around God’s Word. For those of you with young children, here are a few tips to help you make family devotions a vital part of your family life. 1. Start … Continue reading

More on Charlotte Mason and Living Books

Andrea’s recent post about her use of a Charlotte Mason (or, “CM”) curriculum inspired me to share a little more about how we use Miss Mason’s methods in our homeschool. Charlotte Mason, a 19th century British educator, was unmarried and childless, but she had a keen understanding of children and an expert’s eye for what interests them. One of the most prominent tenets of her philosophy — her belief that educators and parents should make use of “living books” rather than textbooks — has had a strong influence on our homeschool and on my personal philosophy. I was just beginning … Continue reading

The Value of Devotions

What better way to show love and respect toward our Lord and Savior than to have devotional time with Him? There are many ways to devote time to God: Find online devotionals. There are many available daily online in addition to reading them in books. The benefit you get from this is gaining new perspectives on life and ways of seeing situations. Sometimes devotionals can help get us out of a box or give us a … Continue reading

Family Devotions

If your family is as busy as mine, you know that it is difficult to set aside time to do family devotions. It is, however, vital to a Christian family. As parents, it’s our job to teach our children about God and to help them love His word. During devotion time we do these things. For my family, we have done it differently at different times. Our church used to meet on Saturday evening, so we would use Sunday morning to do family worship. My husband learned to strum a few kids’ worship songs on his guitar and we would … Continue reading

A Wedding Gift toTreasure

Is there a wedding coming up in your family? What about a unique wedding gift? In the marriage blog I wrote about a unique recipe book. This is adapted from that idea. What about giving the happy couple a book of the family’s favorite verses and those of family members? Each page could include a favorite bible verse or two as well as a few lines about why that verse is special to you. You might include an example of a situation or story of where that verse was a help to you in your life or a drawing, a … Continue reading

Two Love Stories

Last Friday Mick took me to the movies. We saw ‘Nights in Rodanthe.’ I’m a big fan of Nicholas Sparks and read the book some time back, so as soon as I saw the movie on I wanted to go. Mick had been through two previous films from books by Nicholas Sparks. ‘The Notebook’ was the first which he thought was a beautiful though sad story and well acted. If you haven’t seen it, it is the story of a couple’s over and how when she has Alzheimer’s he keeps reminding her of their love their story. Though he enjojed … Continue reading
