Do You Want to be Smarter?by Dale Harcombe | More from this Blogger 27 Apr 2009 06:01 PM
Wisdom is essential if we are to successfully negotiate our way through this life and the problems it throws at us from time to time. Some people take the way out of trying to peek into the future by reading their horoscope or having a reading of tea leaves or going to a fortune teller. All of these solutions are fraught with danger. It is opening us up to the occult. There is a far better and more reliable way to obtain wisdom. God has given us a framework for making wise decisions. The starting point for it, needs to be NOT trying to look into the future, the starting point needs to be fear of the Lord. The bible tells us 'The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding,' Proverbs 9:10. So if you want to be wise, turn first to God, the Creator of the universe, who has all the answers to life's questions. This same point of turning first to God comes up in Proverbs 1:7, 'The fear of the Lords is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction.' So if you don't want to be foolish turn to God and to His word. Have you ever watched a building being built? First they start to dig- a big hole. The taller the building will be, the deeper the hole dug. Then the builder lays a strong foundation. If we want to be wise we need a strong foundation. Every pillar of your lives, every decision is affected by the foundation. The only foundation for which to build a life of wisdom and understanding is on God. We need to understand the character of God. We can only do that if we spend time with Him in prayer and reading His Word. Join me next time for more thoughts about how to get smarter.
