Devotions of Prayer

Like many of the other topics I have written about in my "Devotions" series, doing a study over prayer is hardly something that can be done completely in one short setting. The Bible has a lot to say about prayer: how to pray, what to pray for, and examples of prayer.
An in-depth study on prayer would likely take several hours, if not more, of intense look at the Bible and what it has to say about prayer. However, by saying that I do not intend to discourage you, but rather prepare you for what is available on the topic of prayer. It should also be noted that you could do a simple study of prayer in a much shorter amount of time. Below I have listed some different "mini-studies" you could do on the topic of prayer.
I think one place to start a study on prayer might be with Jesus. Jesus was a very prayerful individual and there are several recorded instances of Him praying or when He left to pray. Also, in John 17, a lengthy prayer of Jesus is recorded.
Another mini-study you could do on prayer would be to look at how the Bible explains how we are to pray. The Bible clearly teaches that Christians are to pray to the Heavenly Father through Jesus. Also, prayer should be done in a private place, rather than in the open for man to see.
Finally, you might also consider a study over different things that Christians should pray about. For instance, Christians should praise God in their prayers and also thank God in their prayers. However, there are other things Christians can and should pray about. Looking at these things would be a good reminder of things you could pray for in your own prayer life.
Here are a few scriptures dealing with prayer:
- Matthew 6:5: ""And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward."
- Matthew 14:23: "And after he [Jesus] had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray."
- 1st Thessalonians 5:17: "pray without ceasing,"
