Dealing With Homeschool Inconsistencies

In a past article on the Cons of Homeschooling, I responded to stereotypes that people see as cons of homeschooling and also mentioned some of my own ideas about possible cons of homeschooling. I mentioned problems such as parental capability, responsibility, financial, life circumstance issues, and the attitudes of others. There is another major con that I would also like to mention. It is lack of consistency. I am not saying that homeschoolers are by nature inconsistent with their children. What I am saying is that each homeschooler is so focused on their own children, that we can be inconsistent … Continue reading

Dealing With Grief

Recently I overheard two women in the supermarket car park talking about the death of someone they knew. One said, ‘It happened so suddenly and that’s always harder to cope with.’ ‘Such a shock to the family. No one was prepared,’ the other woman agreed. Is it harder to cope with? I’d dispute that. Are we ever prepared for death? I thought about my own experience with the death of my parents. Yes, Dad’s death left us in shock. It also left me feeling guilty. I was the only home with him when it happened and I used to think … Continue reading

Dealing with Food Strikes

When my kids were younger (and they still do this to some extent) they would go in phases with their food intake. There would be periods where it seemed like they were eating everything in site, other times where they ate like tiny birds and still others where they seemed to be on “strike” and refusing to eat a certain meal or a type of food. For a parent trying to make sure the child gets enough nutrition, it can be extremely frustrating and it is hard not to worry that the child will get dehydrated or get rickets or … Continue reading

Dealing With Doubt

Have you ever wondered about Thomas? Wondered why Thomas wasn’t with the disciples when Jesus first appeared to them? Was his grief so deep that he couldn’t cope with being with the other disciples but needed to be alone to deal with it? That’s the way some people deal with grief. Then when they’ve worked through it, they can come back and relate to others again. Or was Thomas hiding for fear of the consequences for the disciples? After all, Jesus had been killed. Would the Pharisees and those who were against Jesus come after his disciples next? Maybe it … Continue reading

Dealing with a Skeptical Client or Customer

There is always going to be one or two people who are just plain skeptical. It does not matter how open and friendly you try to be, they are going to be curious and concerned—wondering what your motivations are, whether or not the products actually work, wanting to know if you are going to follow through on promises and assuming that you will not. Some of us find skeptical individuals to be tough to work with… Chances are, the skeptical client or customer has been burnt before by unsavory business practices or he or she is someone who is either … Continue reading

Dealing with a “Hot Headed” Client or Customer

Not everyone we deal with in our home businesses is going to be pleasant and easy-going—sooner or late we will find ourselves having to work with someone who is more argumentative, passionate, or what one might call “hot headed.” Should we just avoid or eliminate anyone who is incredibly hot headed, or are there ways to work with these super-passionate people? One of the things I have learned is that there are different kinds of “hot headed”—there is the angry, negative, argumentative person, but there are also people who are reactionary, and those who feel really passionate about things and … Continue reading

Dealing with Prejudice

I received one of the most rude, narrow-minded, bigoted comments on a blog today. When I weighed 260 pounds, I dealt with people’s attitudes toward my weight all the time. To salespeople, I didn’t exist. I’d walk into a store with the intent to purchase something (usually grossly overpriced clothing) an be completely ignored. Eventually, I found that I received better customer service by online ordering. If I had the nerve to go to a fast food restaurant and order anything more than a salad, I’d get “the look”. If you’ve ever been on the receiving end of the look, … Continue reading

Tips for First Time Hosts of Thanksgiving Dinner

Thanksgiving is celebrated with family. It always includes a big dinner with tons of food. This can be overwhelming for first time hosts of Thanksgiving dinner. Don’t panic! Cloudy With a Chance of Tooth Showers

It’s raining teeth around here. Teeny-tiny, itsy-bitsy pearly whites belonging to a child who was absolutely convinced that she would go to her grave with all of her baby teeth intact. My 8-year-old has turned into a human slot machine, except when you pull her arm she spits out teeth instead of quarters. Which is not to say that she hasn’t made out like a pachislo addict. Who needs to hit the jackpot on a real one-arm bandit when you’ve got the Tooth Fairy making sure you win big when you loose little choppers? My daughter’s teeth have been falling … Continue reading
