Coasting In Life

You go to church, you read the Bible a few years ago, you are generally a good person and most importantly you have asked Jesus to be Lord of your life. Now it's smooth sailing, except you can't help but feel something's missing...

While I was in church one Sunday, our pastor said something that really stuck with me. He said, "When coasting in life, you are always going down hill." He continued by reminding us we need God's help to go up. Indeed, heaven is up, not down.

You would not eat one good meal and suggest you never need to eat again since that need was met. We are living beings physically and spiritually. I think one of the biggest lies Satan would have Christians believe is we're fine right where we are. When we as Christians are not growing, we are not just standing still, we are in fact backsliding. I liken this to a treadmill; life continues whether we are moving or backward or forward. Satan is going to constantly try to pull us down. God will help us move forward against the pull of the enemy if we ask Him.

Though this might sound discouraging to some who don't feel like moving forward, I want to tell you that God is so gracious. The wonderful thing about Him is when we are weak and seek Him, His strength can sustain us and He can carry us.

  • "And He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake. For when I am weak then I am strong." (2 Corinthians 12:9-10)

If you find yourself backsliding or feeling like something is missing, don't hesitate to seek God and tell Him, "God, I need you. I don't want to grow distant from You. Please help me." Then listen to Him. Is He laying on your heart to return to church, get involved in a Christian group, find an accountability partner, read your Bible or just spend some time confessing your heart to Him in repentance?

"You would not eat one good meal and suggest you never need to eat again since that need was met. We are living beings physically and spiritually. " That's a very beautiful and profound sentiment and applies to everyone. Excellent blog, Melissa.
