Freedom of Speech

If you haven’t heard about the Chick-fil-a controversy, you’ve probably been living under a rock. Chick-fil-a is a Christian based company that supports the biblical definition of marriage as only between a man and a woman. More importantly than what they believe or what I believe is, what are our children hearing? What do they believe? As a single mother I’ve had a fair amount of control over what Hailey is exposed to. I censor TV, movies, books, social media, to protect her. I’m not trying to protect her from differing opinions or lifestyles, once she leaves my home she … Continue reading

Sunday Christians?

In Romans 12 Paul urges believers to be ‘living sacrifices’ verse 1. What does it mean to be a living sacrifice? It means that we will ensure that we make decisions and choices each day that are pleasing to God. That may mean sometimes having to put aside what we want to do to help someone else or to so something for God and for His Kingdom. Like today I had to put aside going shopping do for some summer tops while they are on sale to do what I believed God was calling me to do. It’s no good … Continue reading

Man Fired for Same-Sex T-Shirt

Remember when everyone raised such a stink over Chick-fil-A when CEO Dan Cathy was critical of same-sex marriage in an interview in 2012?  People called for Chick-fil-A boycotts while others promoted a Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day. Well, the same-sex marriage issue is definitely controversial still.  Oh sure, President Obama said during his recent inauguration speech, “Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law – for it we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well.” And, he became the first … Continue reading

Your Typical American Mormon Family

So, I was watching the Today show this morning and there was a lot of focus on Mitt Romney and the Republican Convention. Big surprise there, I know. The story also included the subject of MItt Romney’s faith because apparently he is going to speak about it in his speech tomorrow night. So, once again, Mormonism is in the spotlight. But, one thing that surprised me was that they said that most people don’t know a lot about our faith. And, I thought, really? Sure, maybe you don’t know a lot about specific theology, like the fact that we do … Continue reading

Appalled at Behavior

I admit sometimes I am appalled at the behavior of other Christians. In particular I feel strongly about people who are so intent on getting their point of view across that they think their right to speech overrides sensitivity, tact and the pain of other people. Take for example the behavior of those who protested at military funeral. While the law upheld they have a right to free speech, a bit of tact and empathy wouldn’t go astray. For some people learning to be sensitive to other people’s pain is something that is not easily learned it would appear. When … Continue reading

The 2010 Academy Awards

I look forward to the award season all year, with the cherry on the top being the Academy Awards. However, this year’s ceremony left me feeling like “Eh.” The hosts were James Franco and Anne Hathaway. I have read that these two were chosen to bring in a younger demographic. While they are young stars and very good actors and beautiful, they aren’t the greatest Oscar hosts and I am being nice with that statement. I think James Franco, who is adorable, was literally phoning in his hosting because he had his phone in his hand a couple of times. … Continue reading

Screen Actors Guild Awards

The 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards ceremony was held tonight. The SAG President Ken Howard talked about the hopes of merging of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA). The Lifetime Achievement Award went to Ernest Borgnine. Borgnine has 200 titles listed on his Internet Movie Database page, including such iconic films as The Wild Bunch, From Here to Eternity, and The Dirty Dozen. He also won an Oscar in 1956 for his performance in Marty. As for television, “Boardwalk Empire” won for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a … Continue reading

2011 Golden Globe Awards

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association was back again last night, with the show that kicks off the award season – the Golden Globes. Often viewed as a predictor of eventual Academy Award nominations and wins, the Golden Globes is a glitzy, if not more informal event. The big winners last night were: Christian Bale – who won Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for his role in The Fighter. Colin Firth – who won Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his role in The King’s Speech. Paul … Continue reading

Words from Within

A friend recently started me thinking about this as she was praying a talk about the church being destroyed from within. It’s a scary thought and yet I can see exactly where she’s coming from. Words are dangerous tools. They can do so much good and also so much harm. Ephesians 4:29-32 has some interesting things to say about unhelpful, unwholesome talk. I find it interesting that it comes straight after a passage about not giving the devil a foothold. He can so easily get a foothold on conversations with gossip, sarcasm, criticism, off color jokes – all things to … Continue reading
