Learn About the NSDAR, Genealogy Websites, Sleuthing, and More!

The pursuit of knowledge is an admirable goal. Genealogists might understand that more than most. After all, much of your favorite hobby consists of searching for information, facts, documentation, and family photos. It is easy to see why so many genealogists enjoy attending genealogy classes, workshops, webinars and courses. Here are some that will be happening soon. On November 7, 2012, the Port St. Lucie Community Center, which is located in Port St. Lucie, Florida, will have a genealogy class. It is called “Progressing from a rookie researcher to genealogical sleuth”. The class will begin at 1:00 in the afternoon … Continue reading

Your Typical American Mormon Family

So, I was watching the Today show this morning and there was a lot of focus on Mitt Romney and the Republican Convention. Big surprise there, I know. The story also included the subject of MItt Romney’s faith because apparently he is going to speak about it in his speech tomorrow night. So, once again, Mormonism is in the spotlight. But, one thing that surprised me was that they said that most people don’t know a lot about our faith. And, I thought, really? Sure, maybe you don’t know a lot about specific theology, like the fact that we do … Continue reading

Secret Shoppers for Churches?

I have to say that one thing I love about our church is the fact that members serve in positions in the church for free. No one is paid. While we do come from a very wealthy church, the clergy are not paid, and therefore, the money is being spent on things like buildings, spreading the gospel, and welfare. I heard about a recent program kind of like the secret shopper program. Mystery guests attend churches across the country for the first time and score them on various things in 15 categories like the sermon, pre-and post-service atmosphere, seating, etc. … Continue reading

The Holiday Season – More Than Just Christmas

For many families, Christmas Day is not the only celebration of the season. For example, in my family for as long as I can remember, Christmas Eve is a big deal for my dad’s side of the family. All of the aunts, uncles, and cousins gather in one place (my aunt’s house) for an evening of Chinese food, delectable desserts, general rowdiness, and plenty of gift giving and getting including a Yankee Swap. I consider it to be a can’t – miss event, and last year was the first time that we did not make it to Massachusetts for … Continue reading

Learning to Simplify

Life is more complicated than ever before. Most homes have two incomes and if not are caught in a constant struggle of making ends meet. Kids are involved in sports, music, social activities, art classes and anything else they can be signed up for to ensure they are fit for society. Our homes are filled with computers, laptops, furniture, books, curriculum, magazines, toys, gadgets, and everything new or sentimental we cannot throw away. Our lives are filled with obligations to family, church, friends and finding a way to keep our heads above water. We are all busy and we are … Continue reading

The Sometimes Frustrating Game of Raising Teens

What do you do when you have done all you know to do? When you have given your very best in parenting but it seems like everything comes back to slap you? Lately it seems all I am hearing are stories about people either I know of or know personally who are going through very troubling times with their teens. I guess what has made it all the more disheartening is that these are teens that have been raised in the church, so they have been taught a certain standard. I realize church doesn’t save a teen from doing destructive … Continue reading

Christian Character Curricululm: We Choose Virtues

We Choose Virtues is dedicated to instilling children with godly character. With whimsical artwork and an engaging style children easily learn the value of displaying virtue. In my years as a homeschooling mom, writer and curriculum reviewer, I am always faced with moms who want a curriculum focused on training up their children to display godly character and virtue. We Choose Virtues was developed by a preschool teacher and children’s pastor who saw this need and decided to fill the gap for her children and for your children. The program fits nicely into a homeschool, school or church environment. If … Continue reading

Ignorance Continues

I have to admit that I am like just about everyone else out there. When I feel like something, or someone I love is attacked, I want to defend. It is no different when wanting to defend my own religion. When I was in high school, I distinctly remember sitting around with a handful of friends and the subject of religion came up. I grew up in Texas, so when it came to religion, I was always the minority. In a school of 2500 students, there were only a handful of us, maybe 5 or 6, that were LDS. So, … Continue reading

Christian Business Topic: Discerning between Distraction and Opportunity, Part 2

Continuing from yesterday, here are ways to determine if an opportunity is really your chance for advancement. Opportunity: The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines opportunity as a favorable juncture of circumstance or a good chance for advancement or progress. We need to make our best effort to choose wisely. Our time is precious and once spent we can never get it back. How do … Continue reading
