Is It The Right Time?

Have you ever picked up a book and not been able to get into it? Then, another time you’ve come back to the same book and enjoyed reading it. This is hardly surprising. According to author Doris Lessing “You have to read a book at the right time for you, and I am sure this cannot be insisted on too often, for it is the key to the enjoyment of literature.” The above quote came from Mid august issue of Buzz Words – a newsletter in Australia for writers of children’s and young adult books. This was a reprint from … Continue reading

Blooming in the Right Place

While I sat having lunch today I looked out at our garden, which is starting to look more like our own, as we eliminate the white flowering plants leaving only the plants we like, interspersed with some new additions. Before me I saw flowering orange day lilies, red impatiens, blue hydrangea, blue agapanthus, blue plumbago. No prizes for guessing my favorite color and I particularly like blue flowers. The blue is interspersed with pink geraniums. After years, my husband has finally come round to the idea that a geranium is not a weed. Starting to twine over the archway we … Continue reading

Spending is Up, but Not Earning

Industry experts are reporting that Americans are tapping into their savings accounts and using credit cards in an increased account of spending in what they are calling a spring shopping spree. It is bringing a little boost to the economy, but these analysts warn that it might not last long, since earning is not keeping up with spending. People are buying everything from new cars to average consumer goods. This in spite of the fact that gasoline prices are way up and the job market is still very tight. In fact, it is predicted that gas prices will go up … Continue reading

Mold, Mold Go Away

In many places the rainy season is on it’s way. April showers bring May flowers, or so I’ve heard, right now there is just a whole lot of dead stuff outside, even with the moisture we’ve had. When the rainy season comes, if you’re not careful you can have mold blooming in your house along with the beautiful flowers outside your house. The first thing to do is check the grade of the dirt around your foundation. Make sure that the dirt, lawn, flower bed, whatever is there, slopes away from the house. If the ground slopes the other way … Continue reading

How to Say “I Love You” Without Breaking the Bank

Listen. Do you hear that? It’s the sound of Valentine’s Day sneaking up on you. Love Day is less than a week away. That’s good news for lovebirds, not so much for eagle-eyed frugalistas looking to preserve their bank accounts in these tough economic times. Given that overpriced flowers, jewelry and chocolate are among the top Valentine’s Day gifts in the United States, it’s no wonder many wallet- watchers get nervous this time of year. Fortunately, there are a variety of inexpensive ways to show your sweetheart how much you love him or her on February 14th. The following simple … Continue reading

Say It With Flowers

Yesterday my second grader selected the Valentine’s Day cards and treats she plans to gift to her classmates in about, oh, three weeks or so. Given that Wal-Mart, Target and Walgreens have been selling Valentine’s Day paraphernalia since December 27th, I figured we’re far from ahead of the curve. Not far from the Scooby-Doo, Snoopy and Smurf cards were two gigantic displays of Love Day-themed scrapbook embellishments. Two gigantic displays of overpriced Love Day-themed embellishments. Personally, I don’t craft more than two Valentine’s Day-themed layouts per year, so my wallet is not screaming out in pain after coughing up the … Continue reading

Summer Science: The Night Garden

In the summer time, the kids in our neighborhood stay out late. As dusk looms, a small tribe of parents emerges from the townhouses to bring the kids indoors for the night. This is the perfect time to pause and enjoy a night garden as part of your evening routine. For those of you who live in much warmer places, the night garden also gives you and your children a chance to enjoy resting in the garden. This summer has been a hot one, and going out in the noonday sun hasn’t always been a good and healthy option. As … Continue reading

Send Someone A Free Box of Kleenex

February can be a brutal month, weather wise. If you live somewhere that is currently covered in snow, you might be fighting a battle with this year’s common cold, or flu bug. If you live someplace warmer, there is the chance that you are dealing with seasonal allergies, as things start blooming, and spreading pollen into the air. Either way, you and your family are going to need some kleenex. Right now, you can show someone that you care about them, in their time of need, by sending them a free box of kleenex. Personally, I am suffering from allergies … Continue reading

Fresh Holiday Decorations

Think outside of the box this holiday season. Instead of filling your home with traditional poinsettias, consider choosing a fun Christmas cactus to ring in the season. The Christmas cactus is known for its flat, oval, pointed disks; its dark green foliage; and its brightly-colored flowers, which range from pink and yellow to orange and red. The festive plants are native to the rain forests of Brazil and don’t resemble the versions you would find in the deserts of Arizona. Given the timing of its blooming period, the Christmas cactus is a popular hostess gift to give during the holiday … Continue reading

Goal Setting and Marriage

It’s always interesting to hear or read about other people and what works in their marriages. We can often pick up tips and ideas we can incorporate to improve our own. Yesterday I read a blog by the wife of a footballer, talking about goals, not the goals scored in football although that did come into it a little, but setting goals in your life. Goal setting is something she said she learned from her husband who is big on the idea of goal setting. It gave me something to think about. Often when we get married we set goals … Continue reading
