Bible Stories: The Bible

In the children's Bible school class I teach on Sunday mornings I decided to "take a break" from the lessons I had been teaching the children from the book of Matthew for three lessons which I think are vital to any child's Bible knowledge. The three part series is over the Bible and includes the following lessons: The Bible, The New Testament, and The Old Testament.

These lessons seem so basic it might be easy to forget to teach children these important lessons. When I began teaching the children in my Bible school class I assumed they had some knowledge of the Bible and what the Bible is. As I began teaching the children I quickly learned that they did not have a very good understanding of the Bible. While teaching your own children is completely different than teaching children in a Bible class setting (you obviously know what they have been taught), this lesson is still an important one for children to hear throughout their lives.

Here are some keys points which children need to know about the Bible in general. Some of these statements may be a little advanced; however, these concepts can be taught to older children.

  • The Bible is the Word of God. I think it is important to know that the Bible is also called the Word of God.
  • The Bible is perfect.
  • People must obey the Bible. Just like children should obey their parents, people need to obey what the Bible teaches.
  • The Bible is given to the world by God.
  • The Bible is inspired by God. This is a very complex topic which is even difficult for adults to understand at times. Nonetheless, it is important to begin teaching children this fact.
  • God wrote the Bible, although man physically wrote it down.
  • The Bible tells us what is right and wrong.
  • The Bible guides us in life like a flashlight guides us in the dark (Psalm 119:105)
  • The Bible tells us what God wants us to do in our lives (how to serve Him).
  • The Bible tells us how to avoid sin in our lives.(Psalm 119:111)
