Woman Fuses Glass to Raise Money for Autism

An artist in California is doing something really unique that raises money for autism. What started out as a simple selection of a shape to create with fused glass turned into a design that fits nicely with groups who want to raise awareness of, and funding for, autism research. Janine Stillman is a glass artist. She creates jewelry using fused glass. This technique involves stacking, or layering, very thin sheets of glass on top of one another. Usually, the layers are different colors. It can be used to create unique, colorful, patterns after the glass has been melted in a … Continue reading

Mommy Blog Bashers

Have you ever considered that you could be helping a struggling single mom of four young children make ends meet each time you click on a link that leads to her blog? Earlier this year Oprah Winfrey devoted an entire show to the “Secret Lives of Moms.” It featured an audience full of women drooling at the chance to discuss the joys and pitfalls associated with raising the next generation. A portion of the episode spoke to a “new” kind of motherhood, in which women no longer suffer in silence about negative parenting experiences, mistakes and lack of maternal instincts. … Continue reading

Baby Blog Month in Review: October 2008

If you had an October baby, congratulations! I hope that you will spend some time with us here at Families.com, as we bring you the latest news and tips for you and your family. Here is the Baby Blog month in review for October. October 1st Insect Repellent and Young Children Protecting my children is the number one priority, but one thing that I tend to avoid is insect repellent. I figure that putting additional chemicals on my kids is not the best idea, that is until now. These days, a mosquito bite is not just an annoyance, but it … Continue reading

The One Thing You DON’T Want To See On An Airplane

“Mommy, these microphones don’t work!” my 3-year-old daughter exclaimed as she ripped off a pair of oversized airline-supplied headphones in disgust during our most recent flight to Hawaii. Note to self: Pack kid-sized headphones for next airplane ride. “Alvin and the Chipmunks” was the in-flight movie selection for this particular leg of our journey and my daughter couldn’t have been more thrilled. “Hurry Mommy hurry!” she cried as I hastily tried to make adjustments to the plane’s complimentary (see: cheap) headphones. “I’m missing Theodore eat his waffles.” “You can see Theodore eat his waffles right on the screen,” I replied. … Continue reading

Should a Woman Propose?

In a previous article I described some leap traditions of women proposing to men and the bad luck that marrying during a leap year can bring. So is it appropriate for a woman to propose to a man? I think if a large group were polled, there would likely be many different and opposing views to this question. Women are becoming much more liberal. Women run businesses, control finances, and even run for president, as we have seen this year. So why could a woman not propose? I think that most women would say that it is completely acceptable and … Continue reading

Airlines and Dress Codes: Woman Is Threatened For Wearing Skimpy Outfit

What do you usually wear on an airplane? If your typical plane attire includes a mini skirt and tight fitting shirt you may want to bring along an extra outfit just in case. At least if you are flying Southwest Airlines. The air carrier is currently embroiled in a nasty PR war with a 23-year-old woman who boarded a Southwest Airlines flight bound for Arizona in attire one flight attendant considered “too revealing.” Two months ago Kyla Ebbert was escorted off her flight from San Diego when an airline employee became disgusted with her outfit. Ebbert says she was wearing … Continue reading

Thank you for joining us for part three of our interview with author and publisher Elizabeth Petty Bentley. If you missed parts one or two, click here. Beth, in addition to being an author, you’re also a publisher. When did you start Parables, and how many books have you produced so far? Can you tell us a little about each of them? Parables started in 1985. Scott Smith, who published “LDSF: Latter-day Speculative Fiction,” decided not to turn it into a series, so I took a chance. Benjamin Urrutia edited it, and we had some pretty big names, like Orson … Continue reading

The Proverbs 31 Woman: The Virtuous Wife

A friend of mine did a Bible study on the Proverbs 31 woman where she was asked to apply the scripture to her own life. As per her suggestion, I too would like to do this. I would also like to encourage other woman to look at the example set forth in the Bible of The Virtuous Wife and apply it to your lives as well: The Virtuous Wife 10 Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies. 11 The heart of her husband safely trusts her; So he will have no lack of gain. … Continue reading
