Becoming Robin Hood

It’s almost Thanksgiving. It’s going to be Christmas next month. In this season, I encourage you to think like Robin Hood. Often in the Money blog we think about how to make our finances better. You may look to this blog for ideas about how you can reduce your debt or avoid getting one. You may look to this blog for tips on the day to day trials and streamlining of your money management. You probably do not look to this blog to hear about fairy tale characters from England. Robin Hood took from the rich and gave to the … Continue reading

A Friend and Foe at Church

I remember sitting in Relief Society one of my first weeks in my ward and spying one of the most beautiful children ever. Really, they’re a family of beautiful children, but my baby-loving eyes rested on the youngest of this tow-headed family. She had impressively white hair and the most beautiful big brown eyes, which stood out on her clear little face. I was sitting next to her mom that day, so I started making silly faces and trying to win her affection. It kind of worked, to her mom’s surprise. Of course, that won me over completely. This little … Continue reading

Baby-Friendly Nail Polish

Fashion has gone a bit by the wayside since my daughter was born. My former beauty routine is becoming a distant memory. Put on a full face of makeup? I’m lucky if my face is washed before going out of the house. Curl my hair? It’s a rare morning that it’s even blow-dried. Whiten my teeth? Let’s be realistic; my daily goal is to brush my teeth before lunchtime. And yet, some days I miraculously find the time to look almost normal. I look in the mirror and realize I somewhat resemble my pre-baby self. It’s on these days that … Continue reading

Update: Would You Allow Your Daughter’s Boyfriend to Move into Your Home?

Remember when I asked whether you would allow your 15-year-old daughter to date a 20-year-old guy? Well, here’s a follow-up question: Would you allow your 15-year-old daughter’s 20-year-old boyfriend to move into your home? If you’re celebrity dad Billy Ray Cyrus you don’t just allow it, you credit yourself for suggesting it, then you marvel at how well the living arrangements are working out. It’s true; according to news reports, teen phenom Miley Cyrus’ 20-year-old boyfriend is now cohabitating with the entire Cyrus clan. According to the New York Daily News, Justin Gaston, Cyrus’ underwear model boyfriend, is living with … Continue reading

Does Becoming Orthodox Mean Giving Everything Up?

The other day, I saw a letter published on the internet to Rabbi Tzvi Freeman. The writer was concerned about a friend of his who was once a successful musician, but who had given everything up when he became religious. The friend was learning in Yeshiva (an academy where Torah is learned intensively) day and night and didn’t have time for his music, much less, to spend time with his friends. When the concerned man asked his friend if he spent any time composing and playing, the newly-religious friend said he had “lost his musical soul and gained another one,” … Continue reading

Is it Time to Make Friends?

Timing is important when making friends. We must be ready to make friends and open up to others. Years ago my husband and I went along to a church near where we lived. The people were so friendly, they overwhelmed us. We never went back. At that time we were still on our journey back to the Lord and we were not ready to be swamped with friendliness or commit to others. Back then such friendliness was all too much. It frightened us off. When we planned to move house, any number of people told us stories of people who’d … Continue reading

Becoming a Better Friend

‘Isn’t that what everyone wants- to be known, to be heard, to be loved as they are?’ This quote comes from another movie starring Melissa Gilbert. It is from ‘Her Own Rules’ the adaptation of a Barbara Taylor Bradford book. The quote stopped me in its tracks. Isn’t that what I want? Isn’t that what you want? Someone who will accept you as you are and love you anyway? As I look at my calendar for yesterday it tells me in this quote from Lois Picillo. ‘Jesus cannot forget us; we have been graven on the palms of His hands.’ … Continue reading

Celebrity Updates: Halle Opens Up To Oprah About Becoming A Mom

When Halle Berry called to tell gal pal Oprah Winfrey she was finally pregnant I would suspect there were screams of delight and a fair share of air kissing going on. When that was over I wouldn’t doubt that the legendary Miss O told the gorgeous ingénue to pack her bags and get to Chicago ASAP. I can hear it now: Oprah: “You better get on my plane and get on my show girl.” Halle: “Don’t forget to stock it with deep-dish pizza. The baby loves pizza…” Okay, maybe that’s not exactly how the conversation went… Regardless, the rumors are … Continue reading

Female-Friendly Car Dealerships

Did you know some car dealerships are now sending their male employees to seminars to teach them how to deal with female buyers? How do I know this? A friend I went to college with is married to a car salesman and they are in the area this week while he attends one of these classes. Perhaps, it’s not as strange as I make it out to be. After all, as a woman, I certainly would never dream of venturing to a car lot without a male companion (be it a husband, father, brother or uncle). In fact, come to … Continue reading
