The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints View of Family

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has its own view of what a family is. This is described in a proclamation to the world that was issued by the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve Apostles in 1995. Here is what it said: We, THE FIRST PRESIDENCY of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children. IN THE PREMORTAL REALM, spirit … Continue reading

The Day the World Stood Still

I still remember vividly the day those towers fell. I was only 12, but I remember that feeling of fear that filled my parent’s faces as they heard the news as the first plane hit. I heard them question each other wondering if it might have been an accident, until 17 minutes later the second tower was hit. We were on our way to school. Every television was on, as we watched the attack that day. As children we feared what this would mean for us. We could hardly comprehend what was happening. Now looking back 11 years later we … Continue reading

Special Needs Blog Week in Review – April 1 – 7, 2012

Every week, the Special Needs Blog Week in Review gives you a brief description of all of the blogs that appeared there in the past seven days. This is a good way to find the blogs that you missed, but perhaps would have liked to read when they first appeared. The Special Needs Podcast Roundup went up on April 2, 2012. This time, I’d like to point out an episode of NPR’s “All Things Considered”. The episode is called “N.Y. Preschool Starts DNA Testing for Admission”. If something in the child’s DNA makes the school think that he or she … Continue reading

Happy Sober St. Patrick’s Day

It’s St. Patrick’s Day. The one day of the year that your kids can pinch each other and get away with it… or start a fight, but what’s new? So, really St. Patrick’s Day is like any other day, only with a wee bit more green and a lot more alcohol. Hopefully, your kids will surround themselves more with the former than the latter. Especially if they’re under 21. If you have teens you may want to think twice before letting them out of your sight tonight. According to news reports, drunken driving incidents spike on St. Patrick’s Day to … Continue reading

Make Thanksgiving a Teachable Moment

Who says Thanksgiving is just a day set aside to expand your waistline? If you are a parent, consider using the holiday to broaden your kids’ minds. In many cases children are taught the history of Thanksgiving in class. They get generic lessons about the Mayflower, Plymouth Rock, Pilgrims and Indians, but far less time is spent schooling youngsters about the true meaning of the day—-gratitude. Whereas the first Thanksgiving took place in 1621, when Governor Bradford of the Plymouth colony appointed a day for public praise and prayer after the first harvest, the first national observance didn’t come until … Continue reading

Visiting Teaching Message-General Conference

For the month of November, we are asked to pick a general conference talk as our message to share with the sisters that we visit teach. I tend to try and think of things I need to hear again, study, or revisit when making a decision of which talk to share. The talk, “The Privilege of Prayer” by J. Devn Cornish came into my mind this time. His talk started out with a story about how his prayers were answered with a quarter he found on the sidewalk when he was in desperate need of a piece of fried chicken … Continue reading

When Prayers Aren’t Answered

The bible tells us ‘you do not have because you do not ask,’ James 4:2. But what about hen we have asked and still don’t see an answer? That has been my experience recently as I have battled with excruciating back pain over a number of weeks and it is still here. I’ve asked, and plenty of others have also asked on my behalf, so why isn’t God answering? I’m sure Paul must’ve asked the same question when he asked the Lord repeatedly for healing of whatever problem he had, 2 Corinthians 12:7-9. God chose not to answer by healing … Continue reading

A Day Off Campus

Pregnancy has a huge impact on my day-to-day activities. Normally, these activities don’t vary too much. A typical day involves waking up at 6:30, eating breakfast very slowly (to suppress the urge to throw up), taking vitamins, getting dressed for work, and being dropped off by my husband and son at 7:30. Once at school, I go through the process of booting my computer, getting water and a snack (usually almonds), preparing for classes, teaching classes, grading, homework and tests, writing lesson plans, tests, etc, and then finally leaving at 4:00. Yesterday was a different sort of day. It was … Continue reading

The Mormon Mom Blog Squad

There really could be a squad for all the Mormon Mommy Bloggers out there. Actually, it would be more like an army, not a squadron. But, that’s beside the point. I recently wrote an article titled, Mormon Mommy Blogs, that talks about the obsession with these blogs. I have to admit, I’m part of that obsession. Sometimes, I find myself looking at these blogs and my head is spinning. After all, I’m a MM Blogger too. I don’t have advertising, and sponsors, and loads of followers. I secretly might want all of that though. I don’t know, maybe I don’t. … Continue reading
