Medicaid in Massachusetts was Model for ACA

The Medicaid program in Massachusetts was a landmark law that was passed in 2006 under Governor Mitt Romney. This is the Medicaid program that was used as a model for the Affordable Care Act that was signed by President Barack Obama in 2010. Medicaid is a public, or government run, form of health insurance. It is designed to cover individuals and families who are low income and who cannot afford to buy a health plan from a private insurance company. Medicaid is funded, in part, by the federal government. It is also funded by the government of an individual state. … Continue reading

A Model to Follow

After a few excursions into various other topics I’ve finally returned to Nehemiah. In Nehemiah 9:I, the people of Israel gathered together. They fasted, they separated themselves from the other nationalities and they confessed their sins to God. They also read from the book of the law and worshiped the Lord their God, verse 3. They remembered what God had done and the way God had brought them and how He had fulfilled His promises to them. It is a good model for us to follow – one of confession of our sins and remembering and praising Him for all … Continue reading

Tom Brady Ties the Knot with Supermodel Gal Pal

After denying, denying, denying, their plans to make their relationship official, Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady made the trip down the aisle last night. According to reports, the couple wed Thursday just before 6 p.m. at St. Monica Catholic Church in front of a handful of close family members and friends. The intimate ceremony was capped off by an appearance by Brady’s 18-month-old son John Edward Thomas Moynahan. The boy’s mom, Bridget Moynahan, who was famously dumped by Brady while pregnant, was a no show. As for the bride’s dress, Bundchen reportedly donned a Dolce & Gabbana form-fitting ivory lace … Continue reading

What Are You Modeling?

This morning I heard an interview on the car radio about modeling. Not the catwalk, skinny almost to the point of anorexia, type modeling but the model parents set for children. The subject under discussion was the use or misuse of alcohol and how children pick up on what they see modeled in the home. At the moment the Australian government is running a series of ads about the effects on children of what they see modeled in the home. If Dad or Mom have always got a beer in their hands, the children tend to follow suit. In Australia … Continue reading

Supermodel Makes Headlines for Being “Bad Parent”

What do you consider “bad” parenting? When I think of bad parenting the words “abuse,” “neglect” and “abandonment” come to mind; not the words “packing a kid on a bike.” But that’s exactly what supermodel Elle MacPherson did with her 5-year-old son and not only did it get her in trouble with police, who deemed the gorgeous mother an “irresponsible, bad parent,” but it also landed her on the cover of a slew of British tabloids and incited national debate about what defines poor parenting. Here’s how this entire incident got started: A few weeks ago MacPherson propped her five-year-old … Continue reading

General Conference from the Past: Models to Follow

In his October 2002 General Conference address, President Thomas S. Monson, then a counselor in the First Presidency, spoke of the importance of having reference points in our spiritual journey, having models to follow. He opened his talk with the story of a painting he once saw of Mary, the mother of Christ, being greeted by her cousin, Elisabeth, mother of John the Baptist. John spent his life testifying of Jesus Christ, and Christ, in turn, made the comment about John, “Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist.” The examples … Continue reading

Never Underestimate the Power of a Role Model

Our family decided to hire a college exchange student from Korea through an au pair agency. I had initially been hesitant, longing for more cultural exchange with Koreans but fearing that I would be judged on my parenting skills, or that someone from another culture might be prejudiced against adoption in some way. Meg herself told us she didn’t want us to get a Korean au pair. (We’ve had two previous au pairs from Brazil, whom Meg loved.) But we thought that having a role model of a young Korean woman would be good for Meg’s self-esteem, so we took … Continue reading

Follow Up on a Single Parent’s Birthday

I wrote the other day about how I think it important for us single parents to set an example of self-care by celebrating our birthdays—even if we don’t have others to make a fuss over us. I wrote about how I have gotten comfortable doing things for myself over the years and trusting and hoping that some day, my example and modeling might have an affect on my kids. I wanted to pass on some hopeful and encouraging news to you other single parents out there. Not only did all three of my teens make an effort to be with … Continue reading
