Mini Bible Lesson: Long-Suffering

According to Webster’s Dictionary the first known use of the word longsuffering was in 1535.  Today the word is rarely used and mostly misunderstood.  Many believe it is interchangeable with with patience.  While the definitions are similar the distinction is very important. To understand the difference we need to find the biblical definition.  You see it is possible to be patient and not longsuffering.  We must examine this further to know how to walk in the spirit. Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;   ~Col. 1:11 As you can see from … Continue reading

Faith Books

All hail! Summer! A time for sun, sand, surf… and church picnics. Our church’s annual summer picnic takes place in just a couple of weeks, and this year along with the games, food and music, the planning committee is also crafting a scrapbook featuring several major events, including Baptism, First Holy Communion, Confirmation, Christmas and Easter celebrations. Religious-themed scrapbooks are nothing new; however, each year it seems there are more and more faith-related embellishments to choose from to make your memory book stand out. Of course, you don’t have to wait for the annual church picnic to assemble a faith … Continue reading

More Lessons from My Mother

In my last blog entry, I recounted a few of the things I’ve learned from my fabulous mom. I’ve learned so much, though, that I felt I needed to add a few more that have shaped my LDS views on motherhood, selflessness, and church service. I learned how to be a mother from Mom (skills that I’ll soon be using). I learned what nurturing is at the hand of my mother. She’s the glue that makes our family function and every member feel fulfilled and loved. As the second oldest child of seven (and the oldest at home from age … Continue reading

A Lesson in Repentance

Today I was sitting at home doing some Saturday chores when there came a knock on my door. I wasn’t expecting anyone, so I went to the door not knowing what to expect. I opened the door, and a man and boy from my ward stood on my doorstep. I greeted them and asked how I could help, and the answer startled me. They were there to tell me that the boy and his cousin had damaged our rock wall a few days earlier. My husband had come home from work that day to find pieces of the rock wall … Continue reading

2009 Church Lesson Schedule

Each year the church changes the curriculum that is being taught for the various organizations. It is done on a rotating basis so that we cover all books of scripture in Gospel Doctrine every four years. The Primary goes through a similar rotation schedule as well. Additionally the youth theme and Primary theme changes each year. This year the adults will be studying Church History this year in Gospel Doctrine. This will focus primarily on teachings from the Doctrine and Covenants. Sunday school classes for youth fourteen and older will use the same manual as the adults. The youth who … Continue reading

Articles of Faith Series: The Fifth Article

The fifth Article of Faith states: We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof. As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we believe that God has imparted to us the power of the Priesthood, which is the power to act in His name for the blessing of His children. This power is used to heal the sick, to give comfort and direction, and to impart authority to others within … Continue reading

Relief Society: Being Strong in Faith

In last October’s General Conference, Sister Julie B Beck gave a talk about being strong and immovable in three areas. The first area that she focused on was faith. Recently I attended a Relief Society lesson, which reviewed the principles in this talk, and it reminded me to go back and think about them. This talk really touched me as I listened to it, and I can see ways that I can still work to apply its teachings to my life. The first principle that Sister Beck speaks about is faith. She lists specific things that we can do as … Continue reading

Articles of Faith Series: The First Article

The Prophet Joseph Smith wrote the Articles of Faith to be a summary of the beliefs of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and to this day, we turn to those Articles to teach the rudiments of the gospel to those curious. Our Primary children are asked to memorize them as part of receiving their Faith in God award, and we often quote them in our Church lessons. The first Article reads: “We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.” This statement is perhaps one of … Continue reading
