Ask a Homeschooling Blogger: Why Are You So Against Government Involvement? Part 3

Note: As I have explained in my first blog this morning, I have received an e-mail that I think articulates the opinions of many who do not home school and don’t understand why those of us who do might see government intervention as a bad thing. I generally ignore these letters because they are often riddled with poor language and have clearly not been thought out. For the original question in part, please see the first blog. This is a continuation of my response. Monies to Fund My Homeschool I suspect my blogs on why tax credits are bad for … Continue reading

What an Example!

We can learn so much from the Old Testament. Nehemiah sets a great example for Christians in how to behave. Nehemiah 5:1-5 The Jews complained that were being hard done by and suffering extortion, not from outsiders but from their own Jewish brethren, verse 1. Some were large families without property. Some had mortgaged their fields and houses to provide food for their families. The third group had borrowed money for the king’s taxes and as a result their children were forced into being slaves, and they saw no way out for them or their family. Their complaints were valid. … Continue reading

Alaska Homeschool Groups and Resources I-Z

To succeed in homeschooling, it is in your best interest to get involved with other homeschoolers. You should join a homeschool network or group near you. For this reason, I have decided to give a full listing of homeschooling groups throughout each state. Yes, there are other sites that list homeschool networks and support groups but none of are comprehensive. Some of them only list Christian, others only list those affiliated with them. This list covers of Homeschooling groups in Alaska I-Z, also see (A-H). IDEA International IDEA International is an accredited K-12 correspondence school for homeschooling families worldwide. Ensuring Our Children’s Proof of Citizenship, and, A Little Ceremony Could Have Been a Good Thing

The Child Citizenship act of 2000 provides that children adopted by U.S. citizens automatically achieve citizenship, either when they enter the U.S. if the adoption was finalized in a foreign court, or when the adoption is finalized if there is a waiting period before the adoption is finalized in U.S. court. NOTE: Although under this relatively recent act, children are automatically citizens, it is still advisable to get a Certificate of Citizenship . Children who enter the U.S. on an IR-3 visa are now supposed to be sent one automatically upon entering the U.S. , but if you adopted before … Continue reading

What Can I Do? – Part 1

So you and I may have never felt God’s call to go overseas. That doesn’t mean we can sit back and do nothing. Over the next couple of days I’m going to suggest ways you can help the spread of the gospel in other lands. First and most important, pray for those who are involved in this strategic work. Nothing of lasting value will be accomplished in the world without prayer. Which means firstly we need to know of the specific needs of mission organizations. So you might want to sign up for a newsletter from one for the organizations … Continue reading

Separation of Church and State

There have been many of drawn out debates even among Christians regarding the separation of church and state. Initially the separation was intended to keep the government from establishing a statewide religion, not to keep religion and faith out of the state. Many argue it’s a fallacy that the United States was founded on Judeo-Christian principles, but I very much disagree and believe the proclamation of this belief to be a ploy of the enemy to break down the moral fibers of our nation and ultimately remove God. Just see what some of our founding forefathers had to share about … Continue reading

“Presidents Day” Sales are a Misnomer

You all do know that there’s not really a Presidents Day holiday, don’t you? What most people are celebrating is Washington’s Birthday. Washington was born on February 22nd. He’s a hero, and not just because we live in Washington state. He is one that is truly worthy of a day of honor. Not every president (especially some in recent history!) is due such recognition. In 1968, Congress moved Washington’s birthday celebration to the third Monday in February, regardless of the date that it fell on. This was done in part to simplify holiday schedules for Federal employees. Prior to this, … Continue reading

Trusting Your Instincts: Know When to Say No

My 15 year old and I were talking last night about instincts, so I thought I’d share in a guest blog. We have fought hard to maintain our children’s innocence, knowing that once it’s gone, there’s no way to restore it. But part of that means keeping them away from bad influences. Children who go to government school learn at an early age about trust and deception through trial and error. Those errors can sometimes dog them throughout their whole lives. They are, however, often able to better tell a “Danger Stranger” than most of the homeschoolers I know. We’ve … Continue reading

Commemorating the Constitution – Attention Utah Residents!

As we all know, Constitution Day was last month. Okay, I have to make a confession here; I didn’t really know that. I wouldn’t have even noticed it were it not for a great article in my local newspaper, telling all about the Constitution and the men who brought it to pass. As a brief rundown of the history: 16th century Europe is responsible for planting the seeds of the American Revolution. It was a time of great upheaval of traditional knowledge. Copernicus shattered the illusion of the heavens and presented his theory, and Martin Luther broke from the Catholic … Continue reading

Your Fun Friday Baby Quotes

Father asked us what was God’s noblest work. Anna said men, but I said babies. Men are often bad, but babies never are. -Louisa May Alcott When the first baby laughed for the first time, the laugh broke into a thousand pieces and they all went skipping about, and that was the beginning of fairies. And now when every new baby is born its first laugh becomes a fairy. So there ought to be one fairy for every boy or girl. – Sir James Matthew Barrie Every Night and every Morn Some to Misery are born. Every Morn and every … Continue reading
